In Sardinia, festive bread is known as "pani pintau," or "decorated bread." These decorations were, and still are, made using stamps. Pintadere were also used to the identify the different loaves when baking in a communal oven. Five have been found in Genna Maria, each different from the other. Some scholars have suggested that they were used to tattoo the body.
